![]() , they accumulate a fatigue debuff that wears away over time, making them essential to have if you want to do a lot of searching and fighting without having to go back to safety and wait until Till all is well and rest. The Iron Oath is a turn-based tactical RPG that is set in the medieval fantasy world of Caelum. Although you can command a company that is quite large, you only choose up to 4 mercenaries to accompany you in any dungeon crawl or overworld battle and choose to use a mate each time. The longer it takes you to work your way through a dungeon, the more brawls in your party and the harder things get for you. You can tell how much influence was drawn from The Darkest Dungeon when it comes to how you work through each dungeon chamber by chamber with random encounters that each have a chance of occurring. Most quests will send you spelunking through a cave or a dungeon. This is the main gameplay loop and it works perfectly. You’re really looking for excuses to go to dungeons or explore the jungle to earn more XP and more gold so you can continue to grow your company’s strength and numbers. Although it sounds repetitive, it’s not necessarily a bad thing for this kind of game. Each city brings new combinations of different narrative driven and procedurally generated Fetch quests available to your company. Hire contracts are offered by residents of the cities you visit and vary in difficulty based on how many skull markers are next to the contract when viewing it. You are the leader of a company of mercenaries.įulfilling contracts is your best way to make gold, it not only requires paying their salaries and buying advanced equipment, weapons and provisions that will keep them alive long enough to level up and become more powerful. ![]() I would love to see the economy of the game get a bit better, but the truth is that you are not the leader of a group of traders. Tying it all together is some pretty wicked sound design. The body falls to the ground after that last hit. While you’re not left with “RNG” in the combat system, you’ll find that the emphasis on battlefield dynamics sets up a lot of opportunities for player strategy as a determining factor for your success.Ĭombat is complemented by some pretty terrifying (and often brutal) animations that make enemies very satisfying as pieces of their zombies fly away into the distance or force you to watch in horror as a furry companion’s. Here you’ll find warriors distinguished by classes like “Pyrolancer,” “Stormcaller,” and “Valkyries,” just to name a few.Įach class has access to respective powers, magic, and abilities that allow them to specialize in front line combat, support, range, or some sort of hybrid that I found very interesting to play. When it comes to the combat itself, Battle Brothers veterans will feel right at home with hexagonal tiled battlefields and turn-based combat, but Iron Oath goes too hard at the fictional elements in its character designs. Hex based movement emphasizes strategy in Iron Oath
